5-Day Bale Mountains
Tour Overview
This 5-day adventure takes you through Africa’s largest Afro-alpine plateau, home to the world’s rarest canid, the Ethiopian Wolf. From the mist-shrouded Harenna Forest to the jagged volcanic peaks of Tulu Dimtu, this tour offers a royal window into Ethiopia’s most vital biodiversity hotspot. Whether you are a photography enthusiast or a nature lover, the Bale Mountains promise a landscape like nowhere else on Earth.
Itinerary
Leave the capital and drive south through the scenic Great Rift Valley. Upon arrival at Dinsho, enjoy a guided nature walk through the Juniper woodlands to spot the endemic Mountain Nyala and Menelik’s Bushbuck.
Rise early and drive to the Sanetti Plateau (4,000m+). This is the best place on Earth to see the Ethiopian Wolf hunting rodents like the Giant Molerat. We will drive up to the summit of Tulu Dimtu, the second-highest peak in Ethiopia, for 360-degree views.
A day trip to the spectacular Sof Omar Caves, one of the world's largest underground cave systems. Carved by the Web River, the "Chamber of Columns" features limestone pillars up to 20m high.
Descend the Harenna escarpment into a lush tropical cloud forest. Explore the moss-draped trees in search of the endemic Bale Monkey. Visit a local community to experience how wild forest coffee is harvested.
Drive back toward Addis Ababa via the Rift Valley. We stop at Lake Ziway for birdwatching (flamingos and pelicans) and a fresh fish lunch before arriving back in the capital for your departure.
