Tour Title: Debre Libanos: The Sacred Heart of Ethiopia

Tour Overview

Journey into the spiritual soul of the Ethiopian Highlands with a visit to Debre Libanos, one of the most significant and ancient religious centers in the Orthodox world. Established in the 13th century by the revered Saint Tekle Haymanot, this monastery has served as a beacon of Ethiopian Christianity, a center for theological scholarship, and a site of profound national resilience for over 800 years. This tour is designed for those who wish to walk through the pages of history, from the modern imperial grandeur of the Cathedral to the humble, ancient cave where a saint once prayed, all while overlooking the dramatic canyons of the Jemma River.

  • 10:30 AM: The Great Cathedral of St. Tekle Haymanot Explore the magnificent modern cathedral built by Emperor Haile Selassie I in the 1960s. • 02:30 PM: Royal Highland Lunch Enjoy a traditional Ethiopian fasting or meat-based buffet at a lodge overlooking the gorge. The meal is followed by a formal Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony, honoring the local tradition of hospitality.
