4-Day Lalibela: The Eighth Wonder

Tour Overview

Journey to the holy city of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the spiritual heart of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Carved directly into the volcanic rock in the 12th and 13th centuries, these eleven monolithic churches are architectural marvels often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” This 4-day pilgrimage takes you beyond the stone walls into the living traditions of the mountain clergy, culminating in the iconic cross-shaped church of Biete Giyorgis. Experience a place where time stands still and faith is literally etched into the earth.

Itinerary

Fly from Addis to Lalibela. After a royal welcome at your hotel, begin your exploration with the Northwestern Group of churches. Stand in awe of Biete Medhane Alem, the largest monolithic church in the world, and walk through the light-filled tunnels of Biete Maryam.

Rise early for a mule trek or hike up to Asheton Maryam monastery (3,150m). The panoramic views of the Lasta Mountains are incredible. In the afternoon, explore the Southeastern Group of churches, including the "Twin Churches" and the impressive Biete Amanuel, designed with classic Aksumite architecture.

Drive through the scenic highland countryside to the 11th-century built-up cave church of Yemrehanna Kristos, a masterpiece of wood and stone predating the rock-hewn churches. In the late afternoon, visit the masterpiece of Lalibela: Biete Giyorgis (Church of St. George). Watch the sunset reflect off its perfect cruciform roof.

Witness the ethereal atmosphere of an early morning Orthodox mass, filled with the scent of frankincense and the chanting of white-robed priests. After a final traditional coffee ceremony, transfer to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. Enjoy a farewell cultural dinner before your international departure.
