3-Day Simien Mountains: Roof of Africa Trek
Tour Overview
Ascend to the dramatic heights of the Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its jagged volcanic peaks and deep precipices. This 3-day “Sky Trek” offers some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Africa. Walk along massive escarpments where the cliffs drop over 1,000 meters, encounter thousands of endemic Gelada Baboons, and search the crags for the rare Walya Ibex. Whether you are an avid hiker or a landscape photographer, the Simiens offer a “Royal” wilderness experience above the clouds.
Itinerary
Drive from the historic city of Gondar to the park headquarters in Debark to finalize permits. Continue into the park for your first trek. Walk along the escarpment toward the Sankaber campsite. This is the best time to see large troops of Gelada Baboons grazing peacefully.
Trek through high-altitude moorlands toward the spectacular Jinbar Waterfall, which plunges 500 meters into the abyss. After a picnic lunch by the river, ascend toward the Geech plateau. The views here open up into a vast landscape of "chess-piece" peaks.
An early morning hike to Imet Gogo, widely considered the most beautiful viewpoint in the entire mountain range. From this rocky promontory, you have a 360-degree view of the lowlands and the serrated peaks of the Simiens. Afterward, trek back to the road head to meet your vehicle for the drive back to Gondar (or the airport).
